$30 DIY Vanity Mirror

I stumbled upon this picture on Pinterest and fell in love with the way the mirror looked.

I imagined how great it would look with my vanity desk, and it turned out just as I thought! Girly and grandesque. The perfect setup to get ready every morning.

I started browsing mirrors online and they were all coming up at a few hundred bucks. I didn’t want to spend that much, so I decided to make it myself. I always check out the free section under “for sale” on Craigslist, and sure enough, someone was giving away a 6′ x 3′ bathroom mirror nearby. I sent Enrique to go get it quick!

Next I got to work trying to find a crown molding that looked like the one in the picture. It took some shopping around, but I finally found one that I liked at Lowe’s.

Here’s how you can make your own.

Supply list:

Most hardware stores can cut your wood for a small fee. I got a piece of plywood and had the guys cut it at 6′ x 3′ to provide a sturdy backbone for the mirror. If I were to do it again, I would have it cut smaller to 5′ by 2′ because you can see the plywood on the sides in some places. Use liquid nails to glue plywood to the back of the mirror.

Let it dry overnight. In the meantime, use the protractor to cut the ends of the crown molding to 45 degree angles. Now that the plywood is securely glued to the mirror, flip it over and get started on gluing the crown molding.

Let it dry again overnight. I am so impatient! I was dying to see what the finished product would look like. I helped Enrique take it upstairs. And by “helped,” I mean yelling for him to be careful not to hit the walls on his way up. I really tried, but it was SO heavy. I don’t know how he was able to carry it himself. But I am so happy with how it turned out!

So what do you think? Not too bad for $30 right?

Update: I was using a wooden stool from Target, but one of the legs broke so I decided to make one. It only cost $15! You can find the how-to here. I love great design and style especially at a good price!
